The population in Blacksburg will grow by thousands over the next several days as students return to the Virginia Tech campus. Today is the first move-in day for on-campus students and university leaders are expecting to see big crowds throughout the day. With several major dorm buildings, including East and West Ambler Johnson, Lee Hall and Pritchard Hall, all on Washington Street, that is expected to be one of the most congested areas on campus. Two new dorm buildings are now open in the upper quad as well. The new Cadet Hall and Pearson Hall will both be welcoming students starting today. The openings come as university officials are getting creative with how to fit all of the students on campus. "In the initial fall semester, it's going to be a little tight in our residence halls," says university spokesperson, Mark Owczarski. "But we're prepared. We've got a bed for every student. We have doubled up some RAs and turned lounges into housing to accommodate those extra needs." The freshman class is the largest on record with just over 7,000 freshman students moving on campus over the next few days. Fortunately, the move in process is one that involves more than just students and their families, the entire Blacksburg community will be pitching in to help. The German Club, sororities and fraternities as well as other clubs on campus will all be helping new students move in. "We've got an army of Hokie Helpers that will help families move their belongings from their car to the residence halls so we can get the cars out of the way and keep families flowing," says Owczarski. Students who are moving on campus say this is an exciting process as they prepare to begin their first year of college. "We're taking a lot of stuff from the car, packing it into bins and moving it into our non-air conditioned room. So it's going to be a lot of fun," jokes Hannah Mertes, a freshman from Blacksburg. "I'm looking forward to sharing a room with someone," says freshman engineering student, Karen Small. "I've never done that before and I'm really good friends with my roommate, so that should be exciting." Move in starts at 8 a.m. Students will be moving on campus Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. via News | WSLS http://ift.tt/2g5u7Yx
